Australia Student Visa Subclass 500: Complete 2026 Guide for Indian Students

The Subclass 500 Student Visa is the only visa that lets Indian students study full-time at an Australian institution for more than 3 months. In 2026, the visa costs AUD $1,600 (up from $710 in 2023 — a 125% increase reflecting Australia's cap on international students), processes in 4–6 weeks for Indian applicants, and has a new Genuine Student (GS) requirement that replaced the older GTE.
This guide covers what changed in 2024, what the GS requirement actually means, and how to maximize your approval odds.
What is the Subclass 500 Visa?
The Subclass 500 is a temporary student visa that lets you:
- Stay in Australia for the duration of your course (typically 1–4 years)
- Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the academic year
- Include eligible family members (spouse, dependent children) on your application
- Travel in and out of Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid
- Apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) after you finish
It is not a work visa, not a PR visa, and not a tourist visa. Apply for the right one.
2026 Updates: What Changed
Three major changes have rolled out since 2023:
1. Visa Application Charge (VAC) increase
- 2023: AUD $710
- 2024: AUD $1,600 (a 125% jump)
- 2026: AUD $1,600 (stable)
This is one of the largest visa-fee hikes in Australian history. The Australian government framed it as a way to manage the international student boom and fund migration infrastructure.
2. GTE → GS (Genuine Student) requirement
In March 2024, Australia replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement. The shift is subtle but important:
- Old GTE (pre-2024): "Are you a genuine temporary entrant?" — i.e., are you really going home after your studies? Implicitly suspicious of students who might overstay.
- New GS (2024+): "Are you a genuine student?" — i.e., is your primary intention to study, or are you using the visa for other reasons? A more neutral framing.
The questions on the application changed accordingly. The GS requires you to demonstrate:
- Academic capability — Your previous study is relevant to the course you're applying for.
- Language proficiency — IELTS/TOEFL/PTE meets the course and visa requirements.
- Financial capacity — You can fund tuition + living costs + travel.
- Immigration history — You have complied with visa conditions in other countries.
3. Lower work hours cap
The 48-hour-per-fortnight cap (introduced in July 2023) remains in place. The previous unlimited-hours arrangement is gone.
Who Needs a Subclass 500 Visa?
You need a Subclass 500 if:
- You're not an Australian or New Zealand citizen
- You're enrolled in a full-time CRICOS-registered course lasting more than 3 months
- You want to study onshore (not via distance learning alone)
You do not need a Subclass 500 if you're:
- A New Zealand citizen
- An Australian permanent resident
- Studying a short course (less than 3 months) — you can use a visitor visa (Subclass 600) with study rights
- A diplomatic visa holder
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a Subclass 500 in 2026, you must:
- Have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered provider
- Meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement — write a 300-word statement addressing the four criteria above
- Meet English language requirements — typically IELTS 6.0+ (some courses 6.5+)
- Have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your visa
- Have adequate financial capacity — generally AUD $29,710 per year for living costs (12 months) + tuition + travel
- Be of good character — police clearance may be required
- Meet health requirements — medical exam from a panel physician
- Be at least 6 years old (primary school pathway)
The 9 Documents You Need (2026 Checklist)
| # | Document | Notes | |---|----------|-------| | 1 | Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) | Issued by university after tuition deposit | | 2 | Genuine Student (GS) statement | 300 words max, addresses 4 criteria | | 3 | Valid passport | Bio-page scan | | 4 | Academic transcripts & certificates | All prior education, English-translated | | 5 | IELTS / TOEFL / PTE score | Test report form (TRF) | | 6 | OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) | Buy from approved provider (Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, etc.) | | 7 | Financial proof | Bank statements, loan sanction letter, fixed deposits | | 8 | Photographs | Per Australian specs | | 9 | Health insurance & medical exam | If required (some countries automatic) |
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Get a CoE from a CRICOS-registered university
Apply to Australian universities 9–12 months before intake. Main intakes: February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). Some universities offer November intake for select programs.
Step 2: Buy OSHC
Don't buy from a random website — buy from a provider approved by the Australian government. Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, AHM, NIB are the main ones. Cost: ~AUD $600–1,800/year depending on coverage.
Step 3: Get your English test
Most universities accept IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. IELTS is the most common for Indian students. Some universities accept India's own English-medium certificates for pathway programs.
Step 4: Gather financial documents
You'll need:
- 3–6 months of bank statements
- Fixed deposit certificates
- Education loan sanction letter (if applicable)
- Income tax returns of parents/sponsor
The rule of thumb: show enough to cover tuition + AUD $29,710/year living costs + return airfare.
Step 5: Write your Genuine Student statement
This is the single most important document. Use this structure:
Paragraph 1 — Academic background & continuity What did you study? Where? With what grades? Why does the Australian course logically follow? Paragraph 2 — Why this course, why this university Specific faculty, research centers, rankings, specializations. Avoid generic statements like "world-class education." Paragraph 3 — Career plan in India (or your home country) Where will you work after graduating? What salary range? What industry? Be specific. Paragraph 4 — Ties to home country Family, property, business, siblings' education, parents' employment. Show you have reasons to return.
Step 6: Apply online via ImmiAccount
At immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. The application takes 30–45 minutes. Upload all documents in PDF/JPEG. Pay the AUD $1,600 fee.
Step 7: Do biometrics (if required)
Most Indian applicants in 2026 need to provide biometrics. Book an appointment at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC) operated by VFS Global in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, or Ahmedabad.
Step 8: Health examination
Book with a panel physician. The doctor uploads results directly. Cost: ₹5,000–7,000.
Step 9: Wait for decision
- Indian applicants (offshore): Typically 4–6 weeks
- Priority processing: Available for an extra AUD $1,000 (3–5 business days)
Australia Student Visa Processing Times (2026 — India)
| Stream | Processing Time | |--------|-----------------| | Subclass 500 (Indian, offshore) | 4–6 weeks | | Subclass 500 (priority) | 3–5 business days (+ AUD $1,000) | | Subclass 500 (refusal review) | 8–12 weeks | | Dependent applicant | 4–6 weeks |
2026 tip: Apply for your visa at least 12 weeks before your course start date. Don't wait for your CoE to arrive before starting the visa prep — gather financial and language documents in parallel.
5 Refusal Reasons That Get Most Indian Students Rejected
From our 13 years of A-WAY data, these are the top refusal reasons:
1. Weak Genuine Student statement (32% of refusals)
"I want to study in Australia because of its excellent education system" is an instant refusal. You must be specific: course content, faculty, research, career plan, ties to India.
2. Inconsistent academic history (20%)
Big gap years, low grades, course changes without explanation. Mitigate with a strong GS statement explaining the gap and how the Australian course fits.
3. Inadequate financial proof (18%)
Either the amount is too low, or the source of funds is unclear (e.g., large cash deposits, sponsor with no income).
4. Course mismatch with prior education (15%)
Applying for an MBA with a humanities background, or a Master of Engineering with no engineering degree. The case officer questions your academic capability.
5. Visa history issues (10%)
Previous refusals from Australia, US, UK, Canada, NZ. Overstays. Misrepresentation. These trigger extra scrutiny.

Working on a Subclass 500
As of 2026, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the academic year and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. The fortnight starts Monday and ends Sunday, every two weeks.
Common student jobs in Australia:
- Hospitality (cafes, restaurants): $23–28/hour
- Retail: $24–27/hour
- Tutoring (especially if you speak an Indian language): $30–50/hour
- Admin / office assistant: $25–30/hour
- University research assistant (after first semester): $28–35/hour
At 48 hours per fortnight at minimum wage, you can earn roughly AUD $1,800–2,200/month — enough to cover living costs but not tuition.
After Graduation: Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate Visa)
The 485 lets you stay in Australia and work full-time after graduating. Two streams:
- Post-Higher Education Work stream: 2–4 years (depends on qualification)
- Post-Vocational Education Work stream: 1–2 years
485 visa is your bridge to PR via Subclass 189, 190, or 191 (skilled migration).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my spouse and children?
Yes. Include them as "subsequent entrants" in your application. Your spouse gets full work rights; your children can study at Australian schools (visa subclass 500 dependent).
What if my visa is refused?
You can request a review at the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) within 28 days. Success rates: ~25% for ART reviews. Re-applying is also an option but only after addressing the refusal reason.
Can I change universities after arriving?
Yes, but you need a new CoE and you must update your visa. Notify DHA within 7 days of any change.
Is OSHC mandatory?
Yes. Without it, your visa will be refused. Some universities bundle OSHC with tuition; check before paying separately.
How long is the visa valid?
Usually for the duration of your course plus 1–2 months. A 2-year Master's = 2-year-2-month visa.
