UK Student Visa Guide 2026: Step-by-Step for Indian Students

Last updated: June 2026 — Written by Sandeep Kumar, Founder, A-WAY Consultancy. We've placed 800+ Indian students in UK universities since 2014.

The UK is back. After five years of declining enrolment from India, the 2025–2026 intake saw a 28% jump in Indian student applications — driven by the new Graduate Route, the post-study work visa that lets you stay and work in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhDs) after graduation, and the rupee's improved purchasing power against the pound.

This is the full 2026 guide, written for Indian students who have a CAS in hand and need a Student Route visa (formerly Tier 4) to start their programme. We will cover the documents, the money you need to show, the application process, the Immigration Health Surcharge, common refusal reasons, and the changes that came in 2025–2026.

1. What is the UK Student Route visa?

The Student Route replaced the old Tier 4 (General) student visa on 5 October 2020. It is the only visa that lets an Indian citizen study full-time at a UK higher education institution (university or college) for more than 6 months. Your course must be at a licensed Student Route sponsor — every UK university and most colleges hold a sponsor licence, and they will issue you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) once you have an unconditional offer and paid the deposit.

The visa is issued for the duration of your course plus a few extra months, and you can work up to 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time during holidays.

2. UK Student Visa requirements for Indian students in 2026

The Home Office assesses your application against four pillars: CAS, finances, English, and immigration history. If any one of these is weak, the application can be refused even when the other three are perfect.

2.1 CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)

Your university issues the CAS only after you have:

  • Met all academic conditions (typically a 2:1 or 65%+ for postgraduate, IELTS 6.0–7.0 depending on the course).
  • Paid the tuition deposit (usually £5,000–£10,000).
  • Submitted all required documents (transcripts, references, personal statement, portfolio if applicable).
  • Passed an ATAS check (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) if your course is in a sensitive subject — most common for engineering, computer science with AI focus, and certain life sciences.

The CAS is a unique reference number. Apply for the visa within 6 months of the CAS being issued (for courses starting within 6 months of application), and start your programme no later than the "latest course start date" on the CAS.

2.2 Financial evidence

You must prove you have enough money to cover:

  • Tuition fees for the first year (the amount on the CAS).
  • Living costs — £1,529/month for up to 9 months in London (£13,761 total), or £1,023/month outside London (£9,207 total) for the 2025–2026 academic year.

The money must be in your account (or your parents' account with a signed letter of consent) for 28 consecutive days, with the closing balance at least 28 days old on the day of application. Bank statements must be in English, on official letterhead, and show the bank's name, account holder, account number, and currency.

2.3 English language

You need to show CEFR B2 (IELTS 5.5 overall, with 5.5 in each band for most universities) for degree-level study, or CEFR B1 (IELTS 4.0) for below-degree. The university may set a higher bar (IELTS 6.5–7.0 is common for competitive programmes). SELT (Secure English Language Test) — IELTS UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, or LanguageCert — is the standard proof. TOEFL is accepted by some universities but not by UKVI for visa purposes.

2.4 Immigration history

You must declare all previous visa refusals, deportations, overstays, and criminal convictions. Hiding a previous refusal is the #1 reason for a 10-year ban from the UK. If you were refused a Schengen, US, or Canadian visa in the past, declare it — it is rarely a problem on its own, but the Home Office will find it in the records.

3. UK Student Visa fees and costs for Indian students in 2026

| Item | Cost | | --- | --- | | Visa application fee (outside UK) | £490 (~₹52,000) | | Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | £776/year (~₹82,000) | | TB test (for Indians) | £65 (~₹6,900) | | Biometrics (VAC visit) | Free (included in application) | | Total upfront government cost for a 1-year masters | ~₹1.4 lakh |

The IHS is the big one — it covers your NHS access and is mandatory for the entire visa duration. A 1-year masters attracts £776; a 4-year integrated masters + PhD would be £3,104.

4. Step-by-step application process

  1. Receive your CAS from the university.
  2. Complete the online application on GOV.UK. You will be asked about your CAS, travel history, finances, English test, and immigration history.
  3. Pay the visa fee and IHS online — both are paid before you book biometrics.
  4. Book a biometrics appointment at the nearest VFS Global centre in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jalandhar, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Cochin, Goa). The appointment is usually within 5 working days.
  5. Attend biometrics — fingerprints, photograph, and document submission. Your TB test, financial documents, and academic transcripts are scanned and returned.
  6. Wait for a decision. Standard processing is 3 weeks from biometrics. Priority (5 working days, £500) and Super Priority (next working day, £1,000) services are available.
  7. Receive your passport with the 30-day entry vignette. Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) within 10 days of arriving in the UK, or use the new eVisa if your university supports it.

5. Common refusal reasons and how to avoid them

Refusal reason 1: Insufficient finances. Most common. Fix: Show 28 days of bank statements ending no more than 31 days before the application date, with the closing balance covering tuition + living costs. Avoid large cash deposits in the last 28 days — the Home Office flags them as "unexplained funds."

Refusal reason 2: Missing or invalid CAS. Your CAS is invalid if it is older than 6 months when you apply, or if the course start date has passed. Fix: Apply within 2–3 months of receiving the CAS to be safe.

Refusal reason 3: Failure to meet English language requirement. A wrong test type (e.g., submitting regular IELTS instead of IELTS UKVI) is a silent refusal. Fix: Use a SELT-approved test and confirm with the university which one they accept.

Refusal reason 4: Undeclared immigration history. The most serious. Fix: Declare everything. A previous US or Schengen refusal is rarely a problem; getting caught hiding one is.

Refusal reason 5: Inconsistent documents. Bank statement says £X, sponsor letter says £Y, and there is no explanation. Fix: Reconcile all numbers before submission. A short covering letter explaining the source of funds (savings, property sale, education loan disbursement) helps a lot.

6. Graduate Route (post-study work visa) updates for 2026

The Graduate Route allows you to stay and work in the UK for 2 years after completing a bachelors or masters, and 3 years after a PhD. Key 2026 changes:

  • You must apply before your Student Route visa expires — there is no grace period.
  • You cannot extend the Graduate Route from inside the UK; if you want to stay longer, you must switch to a Skilled Worker visa (which requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor at the new £41,700 minimum salary for new applicants from April 2026).
  • The Graduate Route does not count towards ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain). It is a "stop gap" visa.

7. What to do if your UK student visa is refused

You have two options:

  • Administrative review — only available if the Home Office made a procedural error (e.g., they missed a document, or applied the wrong rule). It costs £80 and is decided in 28 days. The success rate is low (~12%).
  • Re-apply — fix the refusal reason (almost always financial) and submit a fresh application. There is no cooling-off period, so you can re-apply as soon as the new evidence is ready. Most successful re-applications go through within 6–8 weeks.
